Description:An industrial hygiene survey was conducted at the Cascade Pole Company (SIC-2491) located in Tacoma, Washington for the purpose of determining employee exposure to all materials used in wood preservation. The primary products at this site are dimension lumber for guard rails, posts, decks, bridges, and utility poles and pilings. Most of the work force is used in processing raw logs or dimension lumber for air or kiln drying. A majority of the processed wood is treated prior to shipment from the site. The facility has 96 persons in the production area, 15 in administration, and 4 supervisors in the wood processing area. Personal and area air monitoring results indicate that employee exposures to all chemicals are well within current OSHA and ACGIH levels. Short term exposures, evaluated during critical tasks such as cylinder opening, were higher as anticipated, but well within recommended limits. Ammonia (7664417) grab sampling showed high short term peak concentrations but the affected employees were wearing respiratory protective equipment. Additional protective clothing was also used by the workers when needed. All samples except one were well within limits for creosote (8021394), pentachlorophenol (87865), copper (7440508), chrome (7440473), and arsenic (7440382).
