Sentinal event notification system for occupational risks (SENSOR): recommendations for control of silica exposure at Ingersoll-Rand Company, Foundry Division, Phillipsburg, New Jersey.

  A study was made to document and evaluate effective techniques for the control of potential health hazards at the Ingersoll-Rand Company (SIC-3561/63) located in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. The company has operated both gray iron and steel foundries at this site. Engineering evaluation included determination of the relative contribution of specific power tools to exposure in casting cleaning; determination of particle removal efficiency in air recirculated by downdraft grinding benches; and measurement of airflow at local exhaust hoods. Hazardous exposures at this site included silica (7631869), lead (7439921), chromium (7440473), and nickel (7440020) for the torch operators and welders and potentially mineral fibers for the molders and all others at the site. The authors recommend measures to reduce exposures, including substitution of olivine sand for silica sand, substitution of larger diameter fibers, ventilation of the retractor saw, and cleaning and redesigning the ventilation system.
