Description:As part of a continuing study, a walk through survey was conducted at the Standard Industrial Minerals Company (SIC-1499), Laws Mill, Bishop, California to gather data to characterize talc (19807966) composition in the United States. The mill processed talc and kaolin from their own mines and pits, as well as talcs from other mines. The Mill was build in 1949 and employed seven workers, 6 days a week, during a single 10 hour shift. The stockpiled talc was fed into a hammer mill before passing into a Raymond roller mill. Depending on the desired use the talc was either bagged after milling or a finer grind was produced by also passing the talc through a Byer mill. Various different blends and grades of talc were processed for use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Potentially there were hazardous exposures to excessive dust and noise. Histories of the employees included Social Security numbers, work histories, and lost time accident data back to 1962 when the mill was acquired. Based on the walk through survey, the authors recommend the institution of an audiometric hearing program to ascertain the effectiveness of current hearing protection, better housekeeping practices, increasing exhaust ventilation rates on the bagging machines, and wearing of NIOSH approved dust respirators.
