Industrial hygiene walk-through report, Pioneer Talc Company, Inc., Allamore, Texas.

  As part of a study concerning the talc mining and milling industry (SIC-1499), NIOSH conducted a walk through survey at the Pioneer Talc Company, in Van Horn, Texas to gather data which would assist in characterizing talc (14807966) composition in the United States. There were 22 workers at this site employed during the two 12 hour shifts. There were three mines serving this facility. Stockpiled ore, following a primary crushing process, was fed to two mills. The course grinds were shipped in bulk hopper cars. All fine ground materials were bagged in 50 pound bags. Hazards included potentially excessive dust and noise exposures. Personnel records dating back to 1968 were located at this facility, and prior records could be located at another site. The records included Social Security numbers and complete work histories. The author recommends that respirator protection be enforced for all employees in dusty areas, that NIOSH approved dust respirators be used, that maintenance operations be improved, dust collectors and dust leaks be repaired, noise measurements be taken, and housekeeping be improved and maintained. A vacuum type system should be used rather than dry sweeping and shoveling whenever possible.
