Description:As part of a larger study to evaluate worker exposures to ethylene glycol ethers, an on site visit was made to the Texon Company (SIC- 2621), Westfield, Massachusetts. At this site a flexographic ink containing 2-methoxyethanol (109864) (2-ME) was used to trademark specialty paperboard products. The potential for inhalation and dermal exposure existed primarily during the following activities: diluting ink with solvent and cleaning the ink press. Even at the times of these activities, results indicated mostly nondetectable concentrations for personal samples, although higher area concentrations of 0.73 and 1.06 parts per million were detected around the ink storage vats and the ink rollers. The authors recommend that the ink storage vats be covered, and that strict adherence to wearing respiratory and impermeable gloves whenever handling the glycol ether containing ink be enforced. The authors conclude that, due to the low exposures to 2-ME and the small number of potentially exposed workers at this site, this work group should not be included in the larger indepth study of the health effects of exposure to glycol ethers.
