Basic concepts of organizational stress--causes and problems.

  The causes of psychological stress in the work environment were discussed. A study of 5000 managers in the private sector identified the following major causes of stress: fear of failing; the physical and emotional impact of long hours, travel, and deadlines; inadequate support from superiors; ineffective performance by superiors; inadequate performance by subordinates; and the political climate of the organization. In a study of 500 public officials, the following causes of stress were identified: time pressures; conflicts with others; insufficient information to make a decision; finding no one best solution; competing loyalties; irrational and emotionally charged issues; the inability to get a point across; inadequate staff performance; and attempts by others to manipulate, pressure, or deceive. The author concludes that the energy in a stressful situation can be used either constructively or destructively. Since stress grows as our lives become more complex, we need to understand stress better so that we can better handle the stressful situations in our lives.
