Stress management at TRW.

  Possible causes of stress, ways in which stress is manifested, and approaches to stress management were discussed. The specific environment under discussion was the TRW Defense and Space Systems Group, which was involved in a very high technology business. The difficulty of the technical projects under development and the highly competitive nature of the field contributed to increased stress among personnel. This was manifested by a higher incidence of accidents, an increase in referrals of personnel by the employee health staff to physicians, psychiatrists and psychologists, increased overall employee dissatisfaction, more problems with employee/supervisor relations, and an increase in the number of reported emotional crisis incidents. Efforts to manage these stress related problems included training sessions for appropriate personnel in crisis counseling and programs to increase employee awareness of stress and its effects. Also, stress management techniques were introduced in middle management programs. The author concludes that more effort needs to be directed toward a better understanding of stress and its effects and also toward the development of corporate stress management techniques. Suggested approaches included crisis intervention training for supervisors, establishment of career and personal counseling programs, and personal worth workshops for employees.
