Heart stress: the concept of "types A and B."

  A clinical personality profile that described the type of individual who is predisposed to heart disease was presented. The personality profile has been termed the Type-A behavior pattern. A Type-A person was characterized as achievement oriented, competitive, ambitious, involved in many things at one time, constantly in a hurry, and very mentally and physically alert. The author suggests that physicians need to question patients thoroughly to determine if they possess any of these characteristics. A sample of questions to be asked of patients was provided. Patients' behavior should be observed since Type-A persons often speak and gesture rapidly. In addition, an indicator of high cholesterol level may be seen in the deposits which often form a white ring around the pigmented portion of the eye. The author concludes that it is necessary to observe potentially high stress individuals very carefully to help identify any of the characteristics which may indicate a predisposition to heart disease.
