The role of nursing in occupational medicine.

  The specialty of occupational health nursing was reviewed. Job responsibilities included periodic occupational examinations, traumatic injury, toxicological exposure evaluation, family crisis intervention, implementation of worker health education programs. The occupational health nurse usually was part of a multidisciplinary occupational health team in addition to independent responsibilities. The skills and educational requirements of occupational health nursing were described, and the dearth of training programs was discussed. The interrelationships among the occupational health team were discussed using the occupational nurse's key responsibility area of the periodic examination as an example. The appropriate examination and special test for periodic examinations can be determined after input by bioenvironmental and safety engineers is reviewed by the health team. Occupational health nurses usually take a worker's history and conduct an interview as part of such an examination. Information gathered from such interviews may be passed along to the physician, and to the environmental and safety engineers, if a problem is detected.
