Description:A visit was made to Tennessee Eastman Company, Kingsport, Tennessee, to evaluate control techniques used in the hydroquinone (123319) preparation and the drumming facilities for the acid concentration department. Several organic acids and anhydrides were produced in this concentration department through distillation and purification of various streams from throughout the site. Drum filling with volatile hazardous liquids was a potential source of worker exposure. The gas displaced from the drum contained vapors from the liquid going into the drum. A fume control system was devised. The system appeared effective in reducing the amount of hazardous vapors to which workers were exposed. Control methods in the plate and frame filter press rooms included isolation of each press in a separate enclosed room, and a supply ventilation system. Automatic dumping centrifuges were used to eliminated worker contact with process materials at that stage. Administrative controls included job rotation, changing rooms, company furnished and laundered work clothes, and mandatory daily showers. The facility had a very effective work practices programs, including training, written safety standards, and corporate follow up.
