Description:A visit was made to the Pearson Yachts Company (SIC-3732), Portsmouth, Rhode Island, for the purpose of inspecting the ventilation system which had been recently modified to better protect workers from hazards found in working with fiber reinforced plastics. The company manufactured boats ranging from an 8 foot dinghy to the 53 foot yachts. Styrene (100425) vapors were controlled in the large boat molding room by cross flow dilution ventilation. The main molding area uses general ventilation with two functions. Large exhaust blowers pulled air from the bottom of the mold pit. Air was also pulled into the suspended ductwork located between the molds about 6 feet above the staging. The small parts room contained four hoods which controlled emission from chopper gun lamination of small parts. The east mold room was used for the production of Schlumberger Cabs used as all weather computer control units on offshore oil drilling platforms. The author concludes that the ventilation systems in place at this facility were good as were the work practices observed during the visit. Respirators were used by most of the lamination workers. The author recommends that an in depth study be made of the main mold room along with a minor evaluation of the small parts molding room.
