Description:A survey was conducted at Partlow Corporation, New Hartford, New York to evaluate methods in place at that facility for controlling employee exposure to mercury (7439976). This facility manufactured mechanical and electronic industrial temperature control instruments. Mercury contact was possible during the fabrication of the mercury filled Piston-Pak thermal sensing element. Engineering controls in place at the mercury fill station, the wire pushing and sealing station, sensor repair station, the house vacuum system, and air exhaust system. Personal protective equipment included the use of rubber aprons, a skin barrier cream, and work clothes provided by the employer. Respirators were not used at this facility and workers were not required to change their clothes at the end of the work day. Work practices included restrictions against smoking, eating or drinking in production areas, beards and long hair. Hand washing was mandatory at specified times and workers were on a rotating schedule of 3 months on and 3 months off high exposure type jobs. Biological monitoring consists of urine and blood tests to determine mercury levels. If urine mercury levels reached 0.30 milligram/liter, the worker was retested 3 months later and then removed to another area if the level was still this high. The highest air sample concentration detected during this visit was to measure air flow through the units and determine the effectiveness of controls.
