  A visit was made to Jay Instruments and Specialties Company, Cincinnati, Ohio to evaluate control measures for mercury (7439976) exposure. Major renovations in this facility included the erection of a partial wall, the installation of ventilation controls, changes in processing equipment, and modifications of work stations. To reduce mercury vaporization in the thermometer fill room, two air conditioners were used to cool the workplace air. Dilution ventilation was accomplished using exhaust fans and clean supply air from outside. The mercury use area was isolated from the rest of the manufacturing areas. For vacuuming elemental mercury fRom, William N.ork surfaces and floors a Dayton stainless steel vacuum cleaner with a charcoal filter was used. A special mercury disposal program was designed to minimize worker contact with mercury. Personal protective equipment included cloth smocks, disposable hair bonnets, gloves, and respirators. Specific work practices were enforced to limit worker contact. Biological monitoring began in 1974 involving urinalysis one to three times a year; workers were removed from the mercury use areas when analysis indicated certain exposure levels were reached. The only detected deviation from mercury exposure standards was during operation of the vacuum cleaner when a concentration over 0.5mg/m3 was recorded. The author recommends that a partitioning wall be extended to the ceiling and that an air monitoring program be initiated.
