Preliminary survey report: Hillcrest Veneer Plant, Burlington Furniture Industries, Inc., High Point, North Carolina.

  An on site visit was made to the Hillcrest Veneer Facility of the Burlington Furniture Industries (SIC-2511) located in High Point, North Carolina to observe the processes involving adhesives, emphasizing the methods of application and the control measures used to decrease employee exposure to hazardous materials. Pieces of veneer were trimmed and assembled into sheets which were then bonded to both sides of a processed wood base to form a panel. The primary adhesive used was a heat cured urea/formaldehyde resin applied to the veneer by spraying during a hot press veneering process. There was also a cold press veneering process in which a water based aliphatic resin glue was used. Due to an excellent local exhaust ventilation system, the workplace air concentrations of formaldehyde (50000) were less than 1 part per million. Workers who handled the boards after the resin has been applied wore gloves. An active and progressive health and safety program was in place at this facility. The author recommends the inclusion of this facility for an in depth survey if the furniture and wood products field is chosen for further examination.
