Description:An on site visit was made to the Particleboard Facility of the Timber Products Company (SIC-2492) to observe the processes involving adhesives, with particular attention given to the application of these adhesives and specific control measures taken to prevent the exposure of the workers to formaldehyde (50000). The particleboard production process involved the use of urea/formaldehyde resin. The resin was sprayed on wood particles as they fell through a blending chute. These resin coated particles were conveyed to bins fRom, William N.hich layers were coated onto large, metal caul plates. Two core layers were placed between two face layers. Newly formed boards were conveyed to the cooling wheel. Local exhaust ventilation was used over the cooling wheel. Two roof fans located above the press removed much of the heated air from the press area. A detector tube sample taken close to the press showed less than 1.5 part per million (ppm) formaldehyde. Another sample revealed 1ppm formaldehyde in the press control room. There was no ventilation in the area where the resin was pumped and sprayed; little, if any, formaldehyde was detected there. Hearing protectors and safety glasses were required for some jobs; respirators were not mandatory for any worker. The author concludes indicated that while there were pockets where formaldehyde odors were evident, the workplace concentrations appeared to be quite low.
