Description:A survey was conducted at the Lockheed Corporation (SIC-3721), Burbank, California for the purpose of observing processes involving the use of adhesives in a commercial aviation manufacturing facility. Particular attention was given to processes involving the use of epoxy film adhesives and potting compounds, and polysulfide sealants. The most serious hazard was the solvent carrier in the requisite primer associated with film adhesives. Adhesive materials were used to seal and bond the honeycomb panels which were riveted to some sections of the framework. Most of the honeycomb panels consisted of a layer of honeycomb material between two aluminum sheets, bonded with a film adhesive. One of two primers was used in the process. The first was an epoxy phenolic primer, with a solvent mixture including methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933) (MEK). The other primer was an epoxy modified polyamide with solids content of from 10 to 20 percent in a solvent blend containing ethylene-dichloride (107062) and methanol (67561). All primer spray booths were ventilated. All booths were interlocked so that the pump air was not supplied if the ventilation was not operating. Some booths have water quenched exhaust ventilation. Drying ovens and autoclaves vent to the outside. Those involved in spray painting use respirators. The author concludes that these booths are well designed and that the film adhesives are inherently safe.
