Description:An on site visit was made to the Leeds and Northrup Company, North Wales, Pennsylvania to evaluate control methods to limit worker exposure to mercury (7439976). The company manufactured electronic instrumentation and systems controls. Mercury control techniques described included ventilation systems, airflow design, recirculating air filter units, mercury spill control kits, mercury spill pumps and filters, mercury sink traps, bench top coverings, high current supply substitution, plastic trays, contact bar caps, modifications to storage cabinets, and exhaust hoods for amalgamation processes. Personal protective equipment included cloth lab coats, rubber soled shoes, disposable shoe coverings and disposable rubber surgical gloves. Self contained breathing apparatus, disposable clothing, rubber boots, and disposable shoe coverings over boots were available in the event of emergency. Work practices, biological and air contaminant monitoring, and training were described. Worker urine mercury levels were below 20 micrograms/liter. Many of the adopted controls were inexpensive. This approach is recommended as it does little to interfere with capital investment. An in depth survey was not recommended because the specialized nature of the use of mercury at this site makes the control methods in operation here less applicable to other industries.
