Preliminary control technology assessment of Mansfield Sanitary, Incorporated, Perrysville, Ohio.

  A visit was made to the Mansfield Sanitary Facility (SIC-3259), Perrysville, Ohio to evaluate control methods in place at the site to protect workers from on the job hazards. This facility used a variety of clays, parting compounds, and color additives to blend, form, dry, fire, package, and ship as ceramic plumbing products. Clays used include feldspar, pearless china clay and nepheline syenite from various suppliers. Other raw materials included Millwood sand, gum, cultozine-fuchsine, industrial plaster, stain, glaze, magnesium-aluminum-silicate, talc, feldspar, and zirconium- silicate. The company made good use of several ventilation techniques at loading stations, transfer points, automatic assembly lines, and the glazing stations. Parting dust became airborne when applied to the molds and while the mold was being dried. Exhaust ventilation and work practices were used to minimize exposures. Exhaust ventilation booths used for the spraying of glaze appeared to be very effective. Areas in which dust control methods appeared inadequate were at the conveyor belt transfer points where bulk raw clay material was transferred into blungers and at the point where excess dust was blown off of the glazed items before they enter the kilns. The author recommends that some of the work practices and personal protective equipment used as controls should be examined in an in depth evaluation and documentation.
