  Progress made in the area of occupational safety and health during Fiscal Year 1983 was reviewed. The seven regional offices of NIOSH were listed and their major activities identified. The focus of research was aimed at ten major work related diseases and injuries: occupational lung diseases including lung cancer (coal miner studies, diesel emissions, phosphate exposure, cadmium (7440439) production, lung hypersensitivity, inorganic dust exposure, cotton dust, immunotoxic dusts, chemical analysis, acrolein (107028), isocyanates, asbestos (1332214) exposure, and toxic aerosols); musculoskeletal injuries (upper extremity disorders, grocery warehouse workers, military helicopter pilots, carpet layers knee, and video display terminal operators); occupational cancers (brain cancer at a petrochemical facility, garment workers exposed to formaldehyde (50000), dioxin, ethylene-oxide (75218) and azo dye exposures, coal dust and gastric cancer, interferon system, and deactivation of waste chemicals); amputations, fractures, eye loss, lacerations, and traumatic deaths; cardiovascular diseases; disorders of reproduction (fetal mortality, ethylene-dibromide (106934), carbon-disulfide (75150), pharmaceutical workers, organic oxides, glycol ethers, and 2-ethoxyethanol (110805)); neurotoxic disorders; noise induced hearing loss; dermatologic conditions; and psychologic disorders. For each area, efforts were underway to develop a comprehensive control strategy and to determine the need for establishing or modifying standards.
