Description:A review relating to prevention of high lead (7439921) levels through employee training programs, by using effective training techniques during the employees' first six days on the job, was presented. The need for training new employees in the smelting industry was stressed. The author states that initial blood lead levels can be controlled by special training, briefings and follow up meetings with new employees. Examples of controlled and uncontrolled blood lead levels in employees were presented. In cases where no training program was being implemented, there was a dramatic rise of blood lead levels from preemployment levels averaging 25 micrograms per 100 milliliters (microg/100ml) to levels after 1 month on the job ranging up to 50 to 60microg/100ml. After implementation of a training program blood lead levels in new employees did not show such a significant increase. Elements of the training program were discussed. The author recommends the following guide for use in setting up a training program: preemployment briefing and training format; two day follow up by supervisor; 14 day rebriefing by safety director, nurse or personnel director; 30 day appraisal of probationary employee with discussion of blood lead levels; 45 day employee appraisal by supervisor; and 60 day rebriefing and discussion of blood lead results. The importance of selection of the laboratory which will perform sample analysis was discussed and stressed.
