    A review of NIOSH vibration activities related to foundries was presented. Whole body vibration, a generalized stressor affecting multiple body sites and organs, and chronic effects of whole body vibration on man were discussed. The causal relationship between hand/arm vibration, a localized stressor creating injury to the fingers and hands of workers, and Raynaud's Phenomenon (vibration white finger) was discussed. NIOSH whole body vibration epidemiology and field studies have concentrated on the area of heavy equipment operation. The quantification of vibration was done by displacement, velocity and acceleration measurement. NIOSH hand/arm vibration field studies have concentrated on foundry chippers and grinders, and miners. Two reports, one concerning a study of 400 chippers and grinders in two large foundries and a shipyard, and a second on 134 uranium miners, were in preparation. The former study has indicated the existence of a Raynaud's Phenomenon problem. Interim vibration work practices for whole body vibration were suggested. In a guide relating to work practices for workers using vibrating hand tools, the author recommends that any workers should be examined and questioned as to signs and symptoms of Raynaud's Phenomenon and detailed history of previous vibration exposure, prior to starting work. Other recommendations for use of vibrating hand tools included use of protective clothing, keeping hands warm and dry, using the tools only when absolutely necessary, letting the tool do the work, reducing smoking during use of the tool, and seeing a physician at the first sign of any vibration related symptoms in the fingers.
