Description:The NIOSH control technology program was discussed. The objective of the program was to promote the application of effective control measures in order to prevent occupational illness and injuries. The intention of NIOSH was to work cooperatively with industry, labor and academia. The study of the plastics and resin industry was the first NIOSH control technology study that was completed. One of the most significant factors for selecting this industry was a series of widely publicized health effects among workers in polyvinyl-chloride (9002862), styrene-butadiene-rubber (9003558), and acrylonitrile (107131) factories. The control measures in the occupational environment included: substitution of non or less hazardous material, process modification, equipment modification, isolation of the source, local exhaust ventilation, work practices, general dilution ventilation, local room air cleaning devices, isolation of workers, personal protective equipment, process monitoring systems, workplace monitoring systems, education of workers and management, surveillance and maintenance controls, and effective interaction between the process and people and feedback.
