Description:The results of two experiments on ultradian rhythms (UR) (rhythms that occur more frequently than one per day) were reported. Sixteen young male students participated in the study of linear positioning (LP) and tracking. The apparatus consisted of a 100 centimeter (cm) long metal rod fitted with a lever and a locking button. Subjects were asked to move the lever quickly to a distance of 30cm. Tests were performed between 0800 and 1800 hours at 10 or 20 minute intervals. Nine subjects were included in two/dimensional tracking experiments. The target was driven in horizontal and vertical dimensions by two independent, random, band limited forcing functions. Target and control signals were presented on a video display. Each subject was tested every 10 minutes for 1.5 minutes for 12 continuous hours. The mean error in LP experiments in which results of each trial were known was lower than in blind experiments. In the latter case, five of eight subjects tested every 10 minutes had primary peaks within the range of 40 to 160 minutes, whereas six of eight subjects tested every 20 minutes had primary peaks within the range of 70 to 127 minutes. In two/dimensional tracking experiments, variability was lower than in linear positioning tests. The average tracking error and coefficient of variation were 0.162 +/- 0.01 and 11.8 +/- 1.48, respectively. The authors state that the results indicate the existence of approximately 100 minute UR in both LP and tracking tasks.
