  In order to more fully realize the time when every worker in the U.S. is assured of safe and healthful working conditions, it is important for each member of the health care staff to understand his own importance to the total program. The nurses and doctors should have some idea of the working hazards associated with the facility which employs them. Such knowledge will enable them to more accurately diagnose a condition which will enable them to more adequately treat the patient. This knowledge will also enable the nurse and physician to exert some degree of influence in preventing similar illnesses by insisting that healthful changes in working conditions be made. Similar knowledge on the part of the industrial hygienist and safety professional will aid in establishing safer conditions and serve to prevent future problems. The preventive approach is summarized in three steps: first, recognition of an existing hazard and the medical consequences it carries; secondly, evaluating the extent of the hazard; and thirdly, controlling the hazard either through elimination or reduction to a level where it is no longer a threat to safety and health.
