Description:An in depth survey was made of the Novo Biochemical Industries, Inc. (SIC-2869) (NBI) facility located in Franklinton, North Carolina to evaluate the controls and containment capabilities employed in their alpha-amylase enzyme manufacturing process. The process at the facility used a strain of Bacillus-licheniformis to produce alpha- amylase. Possible hazardous exposures at the facility included hazardous microorganisms, toxic processing chemicals, and biologically active products or intermediates. Viable air samples collected from background locations contained concentrations ranging from 120.8 colony forming units/cubic meter (CFU/m3) for the outside samples to 271.2CFU/m3 around the aging tanks. Viable samples collected around selected unit processes ranged from 3.2CFU/m3 in the clean rooms to 705.7CFU/m3 at the sample port. Total dust levels ranged from 0.07mg/m3 at the fermentor tank agitator shaft to computer controlled and monitored process technology which limits direct employee involvement and potential hazard exposure. Potential exposures in the laboratory process, fermentation process, and recovery process steps are considered and NBI's work practices, environmental health monitoring program, and personal protection requirements are discussed. The author concludes that the results of the viable air sample analysis indicate an effective system of control measures.
