  An industrial hygiene survey was conducted at the Papaya Packing/Shipping Facilities (SIC-4581), Hilo, Hawaii to investigate worker exposure to ethylene-dibromide (106934) (EDB) used for pest control in fruit packing plants. The feasibility of conducting cytogenetic and reproductive health surveys among these workers was also investigated. A continuous, low level exposure to EDB was noted for packer/sorter workers. Others who remain in production areas have similar continuous exposures in addition to peak exposures during duties directly in or around the fumigation chambers. Exposure levels are near and sometimes exceed NIOSH standards of 45 parts per billion (ppb) as an 8 hour time weighted average and 130ppb as a 15 minute ceiling level. For forklift operators, numerous samples exceeded the ceiling standard. The author concludes that the facility is suitable for the epidemiological study as there is a range of exposures providing an opportunity for studying possible dose/response relationships among workers, the EDB exposures have continued over a number of years, there are no known confounding exposures, and the management and employees were highly cooperative.
