Description:Health hazard control methods, work processes, and existing control technology used in the manufacture of vitreous china plumbing fixtures were surveyed at American Standard Corporation (SIC-3261) Wauregan, Connecticut in July, 1982. The company employed 400 workers in the production of plumbing fixtures from ball and china clays, flint, and feldspar. Raw materials were received already ground to production specifications, and were blended with water to produce slip. The slip was pumped to vibrating shaker screens, classified, then transported to the casting bench where it was poured into plastic molds and allowed to harden. After fettling, the finished cast was dried for 24 hours, glazed, and fired at 2300 degrees-F for 24 hours. The finished product was inspected, packed, and shipped to the customer. The Division Safety Director performed periodic health and safety inspections as well as environmental sampling and worker training. Employees were provided with safety shoes, safety glasses, ear protectors, and respirators. Local exhaust ventilation was provided in the silo discharge area, finishing area, glaze spray booths, and repair area. The author does not recommend an in depth study of this company since there is no raw material crushing and grinding operation.
