  The proceedings of the Third National Cancer Institute (NCI)/Environmental Protection Agency/NIOSH Collaborative Workshop, Progress on Joint Environmental and Occupational Cancer Studies, Bethesda, Maryland, March, 1984 are presented. The workshop is an outgrowth of the NCI fulfilling one of its functions, collaborating and exchanging information with other governmental and non governmental research institutions and with Federal regulatory agencies. Nineteen papers in the general area of epidemiology and 14 concerned with experimental studies are presented. Epidemiological topics include mortality studies of underground gold miners, styrene/butadiene rubber workers, phosphate fertilizer workers, benzene workers, dye workers, an etiologic study of respiratory cancer in coastal Texas, development of a predictive model for fiber carcinogenicity, and techniques for investigating the mineral content of diseased lung tissue. Experimental papers include studies of the interaction between normal and human diploid cells and chemical carcinogens and mutagens in-vitro; effects of carcinogens, mutagens, and teratogens on non human species; the carcinogenic potential of foundry pyrolysis effluents; the effect of varying doses of ultraviolet radiation on mammalian skin; the cocarcinogenicity of foundry particulates in hamsters; and a comparison of the skin carcinogenicity of condensed roofing asphalt and coal tar pitch fumes.
