Description:An industrial hygiene survey of International Paper Company (SIC- 2491), Wiggins, Mississippi, was conducted in August, 1980. Personal and area monitoring for pentachlorophenol (77101) (PCP) was conducted. Two processes, PCP oil and Cellon, were used for wood treatment. PCP concentrations were well below the OSHA standard of 200 micrograms per cubic meter (microg/m3). The highest exposures occurred during one of the Cellon process opening and recharging cycles. The facility had 83 fulltime employees, of which 69 were involved in wood production and treating processes. Work practices, processing methods, and control technology have remained unchanged since the early 1970s. Company monitoring data indicated low average PCP exposures, probably averaging 10 to 25microg/m3. On site safety supervision was provided by the head of employee relations who worked with the facility's safety committee. Hard hats were required throughout the facility. Disposable protective clothing and respiratory protective devices were supplied for entering cylinders or cleaning up spills. The author notes that the monitoring data does not reflect potential exposure from skin contact. He recommends using coveralls with on/site change facilities to minimize skin exposure.
