Description:A survey of control technology of chemical process unit operations at US Steel Corporation (SIC-2865), Haverhill, Ohio was conducted in June, 1984. The installation manufactured a variety of chemicals using widely dispersed open air, chemical processing facilities. The main elements of engineering control were isolation and automation of all processes. Venturi blowers on loading platforms were used to augment existing wind currents during bulk loading of product tank cars and tank trucks. Where possible, material substitution was employed. For example, aniline (62533) was produced by the high pressure reaction of phenol (108952) with ammonia (7664417) rather than the usual benzene (71432) reaction with nitric-acid (7697372), followed by hydrogenation to aniline. Air sampling in the phenol and aniline facilities indicated that exposures to these substances were well below the OSHA standards. Medical monitoring was conducted by means of annual physical examinations. Aniline facility employees were monitored every 6 months with comprehensive blood and urine tests. All employees were provided with personal protective equipment appropriate for their job title. The author concludes that the facility represents a well operated chemical processing complex, compared to others that he has visited.
