• Description:
  Information on the production, use, and toxicity of 2-nitropropane (79469) is presented. The molecular structure and formula are given, along with trade names and synonyms. The flammability, explosive properties, chemical reactions, toxic substances produced during combustion, molecular weight, melting point, boiling point, vapor pressure, specific gravity, solubility in water and other solvents, vapor density, and index of refraction are listed. The method of industrial production of 2-nitropropane is described. The use of 2-nitropropane as a solvent for cellulose esters, resins, printing inks, dyes, and stains is noted, along with its use for coating applications and coloring. The number of workers and work processes are described for the one US manufacturer of 2- nitropropane. Data from laboratory animal and human exposure studies are summarized, and symptoms such as anorexia, nausea, vomiting, headache, and diarrhea are noted for workers exposed to 20 to 45 parts per million (ppm) 2-nitropropane vapor for 8 hours per day. Metabolism and urinary metabolites also are described. It is noted that 2-nitropropane causes sufficient personal discomfort at concentrations just slightly above the threshold limit value of 25ppm so that chronic exposure to excessive concentrations is unlikely.
