Preliminary survey report: control technology for new materials at International Harvester, Columbus Plastics Plant, Columbus, Ohio.

  Area and breathing zone samples were analyzed for styrene (100425) at the plastics factory of International Harvester (SIC-3713), Columbus, Ohio, on April 10, 1984. Engineering controls were inspected. At the request of the union health and safety representative, a spray booth where an asbestos (1332214) containing sound muffler had been sprayed was inspected. Styrene concentrations ranged from 21 to 70 parts per million (ppm) for samples in one machine area. Breathing zone concentrations in the press area were 31 to 130ppm. The OSHA standard is 100ppm. Engineering controls consisted of local exhaust ventilation, dilution ventilation, and pedestal fans. The degree of potential asbestos hazard associated with the sound proofing material could not be determined. The authors note that the placement of the pedestal fan in the press room may contribute to worker exposure to styrene. They conclude that engineering controls are well developed in some areas, but not in the press room area. They recommend placing a fresh air shower above the press operators' work stations and developing dust controls for small tools such as saws, drills, grinders, and sanders.
