Description:The activities and accomplishments of NIOSH during fiscal year 1981 are reviewed. Activities include an evaluation of chronic disability due to dimethylaminopropionitrile (1738256) exposure. Asthma due to an enzyme in bleach, respiratory ailments due to cleaning up of chemical waste sites, and peripheral neuropathy caused by exposure to a new plastic foaming agent have also been investigated. Computer generated maps of hazards and surveillance mortality have been constructed to determine causes of occupationally related diseases and computer programs have been established to improve exchange of information between various states and NIOSH. A system has been developed to provide injury statistics in a timely manner through the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. More than 3.3 million occupational injuries have been reported. Studies have been conducted to identify potentially harmful components of organic dusts, hazards in uranium (7440611) mills, brain tumors among petrochemical and electrical workers, and ill effects of hyperbaric pressure among divers. A registry has been compiled on dioxin (828002). Video display terminals have been assessed for health hazards and safety measures have been recommended. Carcinogenic and reproductive hazards from coal-tar (8007452) and lead (7439921) have been examined. New sampling and analytical procedures are continuously being developed for toxic chemicals. Effective work practices and engineering control procedures have been developed to reduce worker exposure to chemical hazards. Recommendations have been made to the Department of Labor with regard to the coal industry and to OSHA concerning the need for a standard for field sanitation. A comprehensive occupational guideline for chemical hazards has been published.
