Control technology assessment of hazardous waste disposal operations in chemicals manufacturing, walk-through survey report, Tennessee Eastman Co, Kingsport, Tennessee.

  A walk through survey of hazardous wastes disposal operations was conducted at Tennessee Eastman Company (SIC-2800), Kingsport, Tennessee in March 1982. Treatment operations consisted of biological wastewater treatment, incineration, and special disposal processes including detonation of impact sensitive materials and removal of water from biological solids using belt filters. Engineering controls at the incineration facility were observed. Incoming trailers and portable tanks containing liquid wastes were blanketed with inert gas and electrically grounded. The inert gas was a byproduct of one of the manufacturing processes. The incineration facility was designed to burn wastes directly from trailers and portable tanks. Workers who pushed drums directly into the kiln were required to wear a safety harness to guard against accidental falls. Other safeguards against fire and explosion were incorporated into the incinerator design. Hardhat and goggles were routinely worn. Medical monitoring of biological parameters was performed annually. The author concludes that the incineration facility is a good state of the art example of control technology.
