Description:A personal air sampling and analysis method for the determination of chlorine-dioxide (10049044) in workplace air was examined. Candidate reactive solids were screened for their potential utility as sampling media. An impinger type spectrophotometric method based on the decolorization of chlorophenol red by chlorine-dioxide was investigated. Twenty seven solid substances were screened for their ability to react with chlorine-dioxide vapor in a gas/solid reaction. Only o-aminophenol and a silver metal membrane displayed a significant degree of reactivity; however, both mediums were ultimately rejected. The experimental method consisted of drawing a known volume of air through 15 milliliters of an impinger solution containing chlorophenol red. Chlorine-dioxide was absorbed by reaction to form a colorless product. The impinger was preceded by a 150 milligram bed of silica gel impregnated with sodium-sulfamate and sodium-hydroxide to remove chlorine (7782505) gas from the sample air. The impinger was connected in tandem with a backup impinger to void loss of chlorine-dioxide by breakthrough from the first impinger. The absorbance of each exposed impinger solution was measured at 570 nanometers. The working range of the method was about 4 to 20 micrograms of chlorine-dioxide which corresponded to liter air samples. Acceptable agreement between the test method and the reference method was obtained at a test concentration near occurred below that concentration. The author concludes that the bias between the two methods at lower concentrations may have been the result of a fault in the iodometric method rather than the result of a deficiency in the test method.
