Description:A walkthrough survey was conducted at Moyer Chemical Company (SIC- 2879), San Jose, California on June 6, 1977. The purpose of the survey was to observe the formulation process and note possible sources of exposure. During peak production, the factory employed eight formulators. This number dropped to two or three during off season months. Preemployment physical examinations and monthly cholinesterase tests were provided by the company. No other medical services were provided. Liquid and solid pesticides were formulated at this factory. The liquid mixing operation was done outside, without shelter or mechanical ventilation. The mixing was conducted in open tanks by hand and with electric stirrers. None of the workers was wearing a respirator, gloves, or protective equipment. Solid pesticides were mixed indoors. Some mixing equipment had duct work installed for ventilation. Solid pesticides bagging was in process at the time of the survey. Baggers were wearing disposable respirators, and a fan was positioned to blow dust away from these employees. Members of the survey team experienced severe eye irritation and breathing difficulties. Several containers of diacetone-alcohol (123422), zinc-sulfate (7733020), and limewater (1305620) were noted, but no information about the raw materials used at the factory was obtained. The factory was carrying out a mandatory cleanup operation under the guidance of the Environmental Protection Agency. Also, NIOSH was in the process of conducting an industrial hygiene survey.
