  The procedures used to develop the sampling design for the Occupational Hazard Survey of the Mining Industry are described. The format and data contained in the Mine Safety and Health Association (MSHA) Address and Employment files is reviewed, along with modifications made by the study contractor. Stratified sampling procedures are also described. The methods used to construct the project data base are explained, such as editing of MSHA Address and Employment files, creation of a Site Information File, and integration of the information from both files. Development of Sampling Frame Number 16 from computerized files of metal and nonmetal commodities mines is explained. Consideration of the geographic region of the sample sites is discussed. The computer programming aspects and data files used for the final selection of the Occupational Hazard Survey are described. Tables are appended showing all of the data initially available from MSHA, the data elements used to create the sampling files, mine identification and codes, MSHA Standard Industrial Classification codes, mine operational status codes, subunit operating codes, and the computerized information in each data file.
