Description:Ventilation guidelines for air carbon arc gouging and torch cutting were developed for the industrial environment. Prototype test booths within a foundry cleaning and finishing area were constructed to conduct tests on actual production activities. Two different approaches consisted of unilateral flow booths, both horizontal flow and down draft, and push pull tunnels. Five industrial processes were considered and included oxy fuel, air carbon arc, powder burning, plasma cutting, and oxygen lancing. Unilateral flow booths and push pull tunnels controlled worker exposure to air contaminants when large steel workpieces were processed using air carbon arc gouging and oxy fuel torch cutting. While protecting the process operator, the methods isolated a very significant source of contamination from the general workplace environment. The methods were also applicable during welding and chipping and grinding with portable tools. Besides protecting the process operator, these methods also isolated a significant source of contamination from the workplace environment. The authors conclude that the methods could also be used during welding and chipping with portable tools.
