Detailed industrial hygiene survey: formaldehyde production, Georgia-Pacific Corporation, Albany, Oregon.

  A survey of the techniques used to control occupational exposure to formaldehyde (50000) and methanol (67561) was conducted at the Georgia Pacific Corporation (SIC-2869) Formaldehyde Production Facility at Albany, Oregon, in July 1982. The installation used work practices, engineering controls, and natural ventilation to control work exposures. The main engineering control was enclosure of the production process. Nine areas that were sampled and analyzed showed the formaldehyde concentrations to be below the OSHA standard of 3 parts per million (ppm) time weighted average and 5ppm short term exposure. All methanol samples were well below the OSHA limit of 200ppm. While the engineering controls appeared to maintain low concentrations of formaldehyde in the work areas, formaldehyde concentrations were affected by natural ventilation, including a fairly constant wind during the surveys. The authors conclude that natural ventilation may have affected the formaldehyde concentrations more than the engineering controls. It could be expected that the control techniques are adequate to maintain the formaldehyde concentrations below the acceptable limits when no wind is present.
