Description:A control technology assessment was conducted at Grand Forks Energy Technology Center (SIC-1211), Grand Forks, North Dakota in March, 1980 to study control technology available for prevention of occupational exposures to hazardous agents in coal conversion facilities. The primary hazard was potential risk of explosion in the gasification facility. The major health problem was exposure to materials containing polynuclear aromatics. In the liquefaction facility, exposure was mainly through skin contact; inhalation exposure was the major problem in the slurry mix operation. During coal handling, exposures to coal dust and phenolic and cresylic compounds were the hazards. Preemployment physicals were given to employees. Annual physicals were given to workers over 45 and those exposed to tars; other employees received physicals once every 2 years. Monitoring involved direct reading instruments for benzene solubles, sampling in the liquefaction facility, noise and ionizing radiation surveys, and geiger counter and dosimetry monitoring for radiation exposures. Protective clothing and equipment, housekeeping, and daily showers were measures used to control exposures. Work practice guidelines were implemented to maintain designated clean areas. Potential gas explosions were controlled in the gasification facility by dilution ventilation, and a lock hopper interlock system. The author concludes that the program is too new to evaluate.
