  Control technology development for the design of synthetic fuel facilities was assessed at Dravo Corporation (SIC-1211), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on April 4, 1979. Dravo, an architectural and engineering company, designed and built facilities for the synthetic fuels industry. The design philosophy stated by Dravo incorporated the concept that facilities processing or producing toxic materials must be designed to totally eliminate emissions. Their procedure consisted of careful attention to proper design concepts, coupled with up to date maintenance, safety, operating, and hygiene programs. Their objectives were accomplished by an intensive search to find existing operating designs for the desired processes. These designs were then evaluated for overall suitability. The authors conclude that appropriate technology exists for handling waste streams; however, mechanical problems within the operating coal conversion facility are still under evaluation. There are also areas of control technology that will need further improvement. These areas are subject to resolution by engineering design and demonstration using commercially available components.
