Description:An industrial hygiene survey was conducted at the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (SIC-4784), Randall's Island, New York in August 1981 in conjunction with a NIOSH epidemiological historical prospective mortality study on bridge and tunnel officers. Personal and area samples were collected and analyzed for carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO), nitrogen-dioxide (10102440) (NO2), asbestos (1332214), heavy metals, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Air samples were collected at the Queens Manhattan Tunnel and the Triborough Bridge, Manhattan Plaza and Brooklyn Plaza. Breath analysis was performed before and after shifts. Officers working inside catwalk booths or toll plazas had no appreciable exposure to CO, NO2, PAH or metals. Officers were exposed to CO concentrations above OSHA and NIOSH standards during changing of tunnel posts and during traffic emergencies for short durations. Officers who patrolled lanes and directed traffic had high exposures for longer periods. The author recommends periodic monitoring of CO concentrations, time limitations for patrols, education of officers as to health hazards from CO, implementation of cooling systems for booths, closer monitoring of tunnel ventilation control panel, implementation of a smoking cessation program, free access to hearing protection for officers in tunnels, safety training and investigation of occupational stresses.
