Description:A preliminary site visit to FMC Corporation, Phosphorus Chemicals Division, in Pocatello, Idaho on November 4, 1982, was conducted by a NIOSH team as part of a project to obtain information on control technology used to minimize or eliminate occupational exposure to elemental phosphorus (7723140) and other hazardous compounds in this facility. There were about 600 employees, 400 of whom belonged to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union. There was a full time industrial hygiene professional, a full time day shift nurse, and a part time physician. Employees received a preplacement medical examination. Examinations were repeated every 18 months for workers under 40, and every 12 months for workers over 40. Although elemental phosphorus, silica (14808607), coal dust, carbon-monoxide (630080), and nuisance particulates constitute a potential health hazard, all concentrations were below the OSHA permissible exposure limits of 0.3 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) for 8 hours for total silica dust, 0.1mg/m3 for respirable silica dust, 2.4mg/m3 for coal dust, 5mg/m3 for respirable nuisance particulates, 0.1mg/m3 for phosphorus, and 55mg/m3 for carbon-monoxide. Personal air sample values were also below OSHA standards. The author concludes that the facility is operated in an efficient manner, and provides good state of the art protection to minimize occupational exposure of workers to hazardous materials.
