Description:A survey of control technology for reducing styrene (100425) exposures during the manufacture of fiberglass reinforced tanks at the FMC Corporation (SIC-3522), Jonesboro, Arkansas was conducted in June, 1985. Breathing zone samples were analyzed for styrene. Engineering controls consisted of inserting a flexible duct that exhausted air at a rate of 350 cubic feet per minute into the tank during the tank bonding process and local ventilation of the spray/up area. The resin used during spray/up and hand lay/up was a conventional mixture that allowed approximately 100 grams of styrene to evaporate per square meter of application area. Styrene concentrations during the hand lay/up operation ranged from less than 30 parts per million (ppm) initially and increased to more than 800ppm. The spray/up operator was exposed to a styrene concentration of 94ppm. The employees were not required to wear respiratory protection. The author recommends increasing the volume of exhausted air, using a low styrene evaporation resin in the tank bonding process, and using proper work practices. The employee working inside the tank should wear respiratory protection and be in constant communication with a worker outside the tank.
