Description:Exposure to agricultural herbicides at the Monsanto Agricultural Products Company (SIC-2879, SIC-2869, SIC-2819), Muscatine, Iowa, was investigated. The evaluation of atmospheric dust concentrations, ventilation control systems, and other dust control techniques was limited to the bagging operation in the processing and storage building. The environmental criterion was the OSHA standard for an 8 hour work shift time weighted average for nuisance dust of 5 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) for respirable fraction and 15mg/m3 for total dust. The main features of the dust control system associated with the bagging operation were a hood and exhaust ventilation system over the packer area, the internal exhaust system around and through the packer spout, the sources of make up air, and housekeeping. Except during a 15 minute shut down of the exhaust system, average atmospheric concentrations of dust ranged from 1.5 to 2.3mg/m3. Equivalent figures for average respirable dust were concentrations increased 10 fold. The authors conclude that there is good dust control at the packaging operation. With improved controls, it may be possible to use a similar system to maintain the lower threshold limit values required for more toxic herbicides.
