Control technology assessment for coal gasification and liquefaction processes, Combustion Engineering Process Development Unit, Windsor, Connecticut.

  A survey was conducted to study control technology at the Combustion Engineering Process Development Unit (SIC-5161) in Windsor, Connecticut on January 18 and March 8, 1979. A comprehensive industrial hygiene survey was conducted in April 1981. There was no specific health and safety program for the facility; health and safety were monitored by a division program. Standard preemployment and annual physical examinations were provided for all employees and included chest X-rays and electrocardiograms. Industrial hygiene surveys showed low worker exposure to aromatic compounds. Monitoring of arsenic (7440382), beryllium (7440417), cadmium (7440439), lead (7439921), and nickel (7440020) showed concentrations well below current federal limits. Protective clothing and respirators were provided. Safety shoes, safety glasses, and hard hats were required in process areas. Neoprene gloves and protective overalls were available. Respirators were required for activities with high vapor exposures. The author concludes that greater emphasis should be placed on personal hygiene. Respirators should be located throughout the facility for easy worker access.
