Description:Worker exposures to polyaromatic-hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined at the Texaco Refinery (SIC-2911) in Casper, Wyoming, on August 12 to 14, 1980. The facility employed approximately 200 workers. The company maintained a safety and industrial hygiene program. Medical services were provided by one occupational nurse and a part time physician, and workers trained in first aid. Personal and area samples were collected in the fluid catalytic cracker and delayed coker units, and area samples only in the asphalt processing unit. All 22 of the personal and area PAH air samples had detectable quantities of at least five PAHs or groups of PAHs. The cumulative PAH concentration ranged from 17.1 micrograms per cubic meter for an area sample from the asphalt processing unit to 1,347.2 micrograms per cubic meter for one fluid catalytic cracker unit area. No PAHs were detected in the upwind boundary sample. The authors conclude that the workers at this facility are exposed to numerous PAHs, though at microgram per cubic meter concentrations.
