  Worker exposures to polyaromatic-hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined at the Gulf Oil Refinery (SIC-2911) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 1 to 3, 1980. The facility employs approximately 1,350 workers. The company maintained a safety and industrial hygiene program. Medical services were provided by a physician, two nurses, and workers trained in first aid. Personal and area air samples were collected for PAHs in one of the catalytic crackers and the deasphalting unit. All 22 of the personal and area air samples had detectable quantities of a least four PAHs or groups of PAHs with the cumulative PAH concentration for individual samples ranging from 2.0 micrograms per cubic meter for a personal sample from one of the operators at the catalytic cracker to as high as 202.2 micrograms for one area location in the same unit. The upwind boundary samples were both less than 1 microgram per cubic meter. The authors conclude that the workers at this facility are exposed to low concentrations of a number of PAHs.
