A case-control study of lung cancer near a zinc smelter.

  A study of lung cancer among residents near a zinc (7440666) smelter is described. Interviews were conducted with the next of kin of 430 patients who died of lung cancer in a three county area of eastern Pennsylvania in the vicinity of a zinc smelter and with a matched comparison group to obtain information of smoking habits, occupational and residential histories, medical conditions, and family histories of cancer. Medical records were available on 389 of the cancer cases, and the diagnosis of primary lung cancer was confirmed pathologically for 89 percent. Interview data is being analyzed with the aid of a computer. Residences of the cancer cases and comparison group are being plotted on a grid map to determine proximity to the smelter stacks and to estimate exposures to several pollutants including arsenic (7440382). The authors suggest that the study should help to clarify the role of occupational and neighborhood exposures to smelter pollutants as risk factors in lung cancer.
