Description:Chemical and physical characteristics of smelter dusts were studied. A total of 6027 individual dust particles ranging in size up to 10 microns were obtained from five smelter dust samples. Particles were dispersed on a beryllium plate and analyzed using completely automated electron microprobe controlled by a computer. Small particles were detected by changes in the specimen current, their size was measured, and their chemical composition was calculated from measured X-ray intensities. Results are presented in five computerized tables for each of the five dust samples. The tables give the particle size distribution for each sample, divided into nine size ranges; the percent chemical composition by weight of the elements; a more detailed division of the particles according to chemical composition; the total number of particles for each major element identified; and the relationship between the size, chemical composition, and frequency of occurrence of the particles in each sample. Limitations of the methodology, instrumentation, and results are discussed. The authors conclude that determinations of the relative proportions of the elements in smelter dust samples are highly dependent on the sampling technique and spectrometer stability.
